North of the Border Magazine Review

Dave Miller – North of the Border, November 2004

Houston singer-songwriter Gordy gives us a treat on his debut release with a collection of heart-felt songs that peel away his exterior to give you a glimpse of his feelings and emotions that will leave you feeling like you’ve known him all your life. It is produced by longtime local favorite Jack Saunders, who joins Gordy on upright bass. This also features Rick Richards on drums, and the Sidehill Gougers lovely Jamie Griffin lends her voice on a few cuts while Kym Warner adds some mandolin to make this a pleasant blend of the best of Texas music. Songs range from the title cut to “Broken Heart Strings”, which pleads about lost love, and the sad tale on ‘Bitter Tears” will produce a few of your own. “Silver Wings” traces a fighter pilot, and the tongue-in-cheek lyrics of “Ship Song” will put a smile on your face, even as he sings of a broken love affair. While not a loud album, the meat of the matter is in the words of the songs and Gordy certainly has found the skill to put his heart on his sleeve and tell you a story you won’t soon forget. A truly beautiful piece of work and I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from this talented young man.
